The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has dedicated one special day to highlight the role that packaging plays, and it is just around the corner. Packaging not only secures the products that we need but also fosters sustainability and helps with economic development.

World Packaging Day is celebrated every year on ‘September 6’ to increase public awareness regarding the significant role that packaging fulfils and also to highlight it as a strategic tool that serves more than 8 billion people on Earth.

As the World Packaging Organisation quotes, "Packaging is not only useful for keeping your products safe, but it also helps reduce food waste, so it should be celebrated with pride.”

Each year, people around the world celebrate it with pride and enthusiasm, marking the anniversary of the World Packaging Organisation. In this blog, we will share all the details about this special event, so keep on reading!

Significance of World Packaging Day

This date has special significance, as it marks the anniversary of WPO’s foundation in Tokyo, which occurred on 6 September 1968. The goal behind the initiative is to celebrate the contribution that packaging makes to ensuring food safety, improving quality of life & fostering socioeconomic progress.

President Luciana Pellegrino is quoted in a recent news release:

“Packaging is part of our daily life; it serves people internationally, as it allows streamlined logistics & chains & functional usability & product preservation, which helps reduce waste and other types of losses, and it eventually optimizes sustainability and, more significantly, resourceful access to enhanced quality of life for society.”

The group intends to work with companies throughout the value chain to focus on collaboration, sustainability, and innovation in packaging. It is encouraging member companies to create local events to spread the word about packaging to a wide audience on World Packaging Day.

History of WPO

WPO is a non-governmental as well & a non-profit global federation of packaging institutions and associations and various companies and corporations. Their main agenda is to encourage a better quality of life through enhanced packaging to transform people’s lives.

WPO currently represents 66 countries and has 88 members, including affiliate members, honorary members, and full members, as well as regional federations.

The Goal of the Event

WPO wants to collaborate internationally to support & promote innovation in packaging. The main objective of the event is to encourage global companies to create and spread packaging awareness to their local destinations and inform people accurately.

It has created four major themes for the inaugural celebration:

packaging for progress to highlight the role played in improving the quality of life;

packaging against food waste and extending food safety;

packaging and economic growth, which will focus on supporting brands and trades; and

packaging and sustainability to spotlight circular design and manufacturing.

Four Major Themes

It has established four major categories for the inception of the packaging celebration. The categories are as follows:

1. Packaging for Progress

The main aim behind the theme is to enhance the living standards of people through packaging.

2. Packaging Against Food Waste

This narrative will look into the well-being and health of the consumers by making sure that the food is safe and good enough to consume. Discussions will be held on how to keep food security tight and serve the most improved version of food.

3. Packaging & Economic Growth

This part of the conference will focus on companies and vendors looking to add new elements to their packaging materials and foster socio-economic development.

4. Packaging & Sustainability

This theme will help promote circular manufacturing and will share new ideas with companies trying to achieve sustainability goals.

Vision of the Event

The vision of the event is to develop an internationally recognized medium that would motivate collaboration amongst different industries, institutions, and various parts of society to innovate new packaging solutions.

Another core objective of the event is to create a foundation for initiating global trade and encouraging local competitiveness.

Additionally, this platform is a catalyst for promoting innovation and inclusion, as well as design mastery.

The Contribution of the World Packaging Organisation

WPO is the sole representative of global packaging across various industries and materials. It is positioned to reflect a united vision for fulfilling all advanced packaging needs.

1. Global Collaboration Framework

WPO acts as the dedicated arena where packaging companies, organisations, and stakeholders can communicate together and organize new events and collaborate on projects under the same identity. The official calendar will feature all the upcoming projects through streamlined communications.

2. Engaging Stakeholders

The platform encourages communication between businesses, supply chain actors, policymakers, NGOs, researchers, and media companies with current consumer demands & changing trends.

3. Unveiling a New Strategic Direction

The official inauguration of World Packaging Day will be conducted on 6 September 2026, followed by a preparation timeline in early 2026. The event will be promoted by board members through digital media campaigns to encourage a packaging ecosystem.
